For those of you who know who that is in the product pictures, then this review is ESPECIALLY for you. If you don't know, that's James Hoffman who is basically the Gordon Ramsay of baristas and one of my heroes. I'm a home coffee roaster as well as someone who has spent years in the realm of home barista kung fu. I have v60's, nel drips, moka pots, yama towers, siphons, and tons of other things to make/enjoy coffee so I want to say this up front so you know that I'm not heckin' around.Taste:I say this in hopes that I did not receive an entire case of rotten creamer. that being said, here we go. the taste is not good. on it's own, it's 'just okay' to 'sorta icky' but in coffee, it's miserable. the taste I compare to sort of mildew with a hint of carbon. like the overall taste is there so it's halfway there but the aftertaste is not good. 'oh but you didn't steam it?' well I did and it's still not good. if my case was bad (went through 2 containers so far) I can semi-understand that it died on the way to the states. overall, it's just not good.Mixability/Steaming:So in a cup of coffee, it mixes okay. I'm going to make some comparisons to a competitor so you know I'm genuine, I'm not going to mention their name but you probably know who it is so I'll refer to them as X. when you mix this with a cup of coffee, it looks like you used some slightly weak half and half. for a non-dairy creamer, that's pretty good considering X leaves a layer of oil on top which can double as chapstick I guess (X is actually very tasty but it's excessive oil for fat content is a little iffy). I know this advertises that you can get some milk like foam from this but you can't. any microfoam I was able to strangle out of this disappeared as soon as I removed the wand. the temperature on it started getting into the scary zone (160f) so I tried to be careful. using the frenchpress hack seems to work I guess but whatever.Cost:It's more expensive than competitors that advertise the same thing and does not taste as good.Overall:I'm disappointed. Like really disappointed. One thing to note is that this is made of fava beans which I HOPED would not trigger my other half's fodmap sensitivity (spoilers: it did). I really want to believe that I just received a really bad batch but the 2 containers I tried are just bad. This is how bad: I had to make my own creamer (which while not good was better than what I had... (btw, I recommend a 1:3 oat/water ratio with a touch of sea salt and whisper of sunflower oil). I'll talk the words out of my other half's mouth: "I'm not angry, James Hoffman, I'm just disappointed."Having been endorsed by ( and worked on the development off) James Hoffman, I was very excited for this product. I have to say the oat milk taste is still a little too strong for me ( but definitely reduced from a pure oat milk) and this is somewhat of a turn off for me. I can't really consume this in a latte or cappuccino without the help of some kind of sugar, flavored syrup or just sugar. As far as the texture, I still can't seem to get it right after 4-5 tries. The foam seems a little too airy and it separates easily from the body of the mylk. It almost feels like it needs a little more fat in it. Will I buy it again? I am not sure yet. I have 6 boxes to go through, maybe by the end I might get used to the taste or maybe not. But I can clearly say it DOES NOT taste like milk and it is not neutral in your coffee drink.A couple of things I've seen other reviewers fail to mention in their reviews... that might lead you to not give this milk a try, when in fact it's pretty good.1. I like the taste! It's a kind of savory flavor that you might not expect from the more earthy tastes you'd get in a lot of other plant-based "milks" but it's not too overpowering. Taste is so subjective though it's really hard to rate this but if you like coconut and oat milks you'll probably be fine with this.2. I've seen a lot of people complain about steamability and the main thing I can think of is they must not be following the directions. I'm your typical home barista and I've never worked professionally in the coffee world in any capacity---I just have a home espresso machine that I use to make myself coffee every morning. If you, and to be clear, this is very key, SHAKE THE BOTTLE WELL (like the cartons say) the mylk steams up BEAUTIFLY! You know how I know this? When I first got the carton of 6 containers I was like "well this stuff sucks, I cant' get it to foam!" Then I read the packaging on the bottle where it quite explicitly says that you need to shake it well for it to foam properly, and then boom! It started steaming just like regular milk, it's really not that difficult people. Read the packaging! Most barista-grade varieties of oat milks work exactly the same way.3. I just wanted to include a recommended recipe because I think it helps highlight just what I like about this milk so much. I think the more savory notes in this blend really lend themselves to a caramel latte! I use monin dulce de leche syrup in mine, but the savory and sweet notes play off of each other very well. I like this stuff! Keep it refrigerated, and make sure to shake it and I think you'll like it too! This is the best sub for half and half I have found. I order this milk over and over again. I enjoy this is all my recipes and can’t wait to order more.It does foam up well with an espresso wand, no doubt. I like the taste, but not in my coffee. It is a strong oat taste for me and overpowers coffee, even espresso in my opinion. But I drink it alone and use it in cereal.I love the creaminess of this milk. Doing WW and adding this and splenda to flavored coffee is perfect sweet tooth fix. This is NOT barista oat milk. It stays flat. Will not froth
